JustLeadershipUSA (JLUSA) is dedicated to cutting the US correctional population in half by 2030. JLUSA was launched in November 2014.

Open Position

JustLeadershipUSA seeks a driven, experienced, and entrepreneurial NYS Advocacy Director.  Reporting to the President, the NYS Advocacy Director will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for JLUSA’s advocacy work. The position will drive the overall strategy for the organization and represent JustLeadershipUSA on its largest campaign – #CLOSErikers.  The NYS Advocacy Director will be instrumental in ensuring consistent and effective internal processes and communications in order to strengthen JustLeadershipUSA programs and position the organization for continued success.  This is a senior position for an experienced manager with a history of delivering outcomes.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Program Leadership & Management

  • Supervise at least two subordinates and manage a team of at least six staff engaged in advocacy;
  • Demonstrate consistent track record of setting and achieving team goals;
  • Recruit and retain high-performing team members; empower team to elevate their level of responsibility and accountability for outcomes;
  • Guide staff to develop systems to ensure consistent, high-quality project management;
  • Demonstrate leadership in team communication and cohesiveness, sustaining culture and supporting staff during organizational growth;
  • Oversee program operations and day-to-day duties of Advocacy team members; provide guidance, growth strategies, operational assistance;
  • Assist in the hiring of new team members; conduct yearly performance evaluations of managers;
  • Ensure key project outcomes are evaluated and leveraged for maximum community and organizational impact; and,
  • Work collaboratively with the other senior staff to integrate cross-program activities and functions.

Strengthen Internal Operations and Infrastructure

  • Support the Advocacy team to make consistent and progressive steps toward organizational and programmatic sustainability; effectively communicate work plans and priorities derived from the organization’s strategic plan and associated budgets;
  • Enhance organizational excellence by establishing operational benchmarks, timelines, and resources needed to achieve strategic goals, proactively recommending and driving improvements as necessary; set standards for accountability and measurements of success;
  • Oversee JustLeadershipUSA’s evaluation activities including data collection systems, longitudinal evaluation, and all contracts and activities relating to program evaluation and measurement; communicate and prepare all data collection summary reports and evaluation updates for the President, Board of Directors, and staff; and,
  • Develop a knowledge management system that ensures maximum sharing of information and learning throughout the organization; create an environment whereby JustLeadershipUSA is known as a best-in-class learning organization.

External Relationships

  • Expand revenue generating and fundraising activities to support existing programs and the growth of JustLeadershipUSA;
  • Cultivate existing relationships and develop new funder relationships; and
  • Manage relationships with partner organizations.


JustLeadershipUSA seeks a candidate with the following qualities and skills:

  • A passion for, and working knowledge of social justice and change;
  • At least 10 years of professional experience in a general management role, ideally in a rapidly evolving institution;
  • Demonstrated history of supervising high-level staff in complex work environments;
  • Demonstrated successful fundraising experience; ability to engage a variety of stakeholders including advisory groups, coalitions, forums, trade associations, foundations, and corporate sponsors;
  • Highly organized and adaptable in an evolving, fast-paced environment, with a focus on clarity and solutions;
  • Demonstrated success in setting priorities, shaping processes, and developing an infrastructure that creates a stronger and more efficient organization;
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and coalition building skills; high-level of knowledge and understanding of program replication, connecting programs to funding, creatively generating other resources;
  • Persuasive communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills; experience navigating cross-agency partnerships is strongly preferred;
  • Experience working on issue campaigns, political campaigns or advocacy is preferred;
  • Experience with New York State politics a plus;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite and Internet use required; experience with Salesforce and WordPress desirable; and
  • Strong interpersonal skills, collaborative instincts, sense of humor, and charm.
