JLUSA seeks driven, thoughtful, and creative Senior Policy Analyst. The Senior Policy Analyst will work with JLUSA’s dynamic team to build grassroots political power in communities impacted by mass incarceration, and develop solutions to reform the criminal justice system locally and nationally.

The ideal candidate is very experienced in policy work, and has worked on advocacy campaigns or in other demanding policy settings. The ideal candidate is committed to JLUSA’s mission, is flexible and effective in a fast-paced environment, and possesses a great sense of humor. JLUSA’s Senior Policy Analyst reports to the Director of Policy and Campaigns and works closely with our campaign partners and members to build a movement to reach #halfby2030.

Responsibilities include:

  • Work with the Director of Policy and Campaigns and JLUSA staff to increase public awareness of mass incarceration and JLUSA’s position on this and related issues;
  • Collaborate with the Director of Policy and Campaigns and JLUSA staff to identify policy priorities and advocacy strategies at the local, state, and national level;
  • Respond to inquiries about public policy issues and represent JLUSA at meetings and in public settings;
  • Draft policy-related materials for JLUSA, including but not limited to:
    • White papers;
    • Fact sheets;
    • Legislative sign-on letters;
    • Talking points for a variety of audiences;
    • Editorials articulating JLUSA’s policy position;
  • Create material and provide training to educate JLUSA staff and members on important issues and policy developments;
  • Assist in developing advocacy and campaign materials aimed at stakeholder education and mobilization.
  • Coordinate outreach to elected officials and other key stakeholders in the legislative process.

Qualifications

JustLeadershipUSA seeks a candidate with the following qualities and skills:

  • At least 7-10 years of professional policy experience;
  • An advanced degree in law, public policy, public administration or equivalent program is preferred;
  • Previous leadership role in an organization, and ability to develop bold, imaginative recommendations on challenging issues;
  • Ability to analyze dense reporting data and government documents (required);
  • Exceptional writing skills and ability to present information clearly in a variety of formats and styles for difference audiences;
  • Ability to research and write with short deadlines, including the sharp writing approach necessary for advocacy;
  • Knowledge of and interest in criminal justice reform, including a serious commitment to end mass incarceration;
  • Excellent organizational skills with keen attention to detail;
  • High energy, strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills; and,
  • Comfort working with a team in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
